By Ellen K. Ashcraft Last year, New Mexico's own Creamland Quality Checked Dairies approached the UNM Lobo Club to their mutual benefit. Creamland offered to feature the Lobos on selected milk cartons for a two-four week period and donate a portion of the sales from those cartons to the Lobo Club, the school's athletics fund-raising organization, in support of athletic scholarships. Why did they do it? "The Lobos are well known and respected in our community and we want to be associated with community leaders," comments Creamland's Barry Beaman, vice president of sales and marketing. "We support our community by supporting our young people. Athletics represents strong, healthy bodies, and Creamland always wants to help promote this idea where we can." The first appearance last fall, only on cartons of whole milk, featured the Junior Lobo Club and generated $6,000 for scholarships. The winter edition, which ran on both whole and skim milk cartons, featured the Lobo Club and ticket promotion, yielding $10,000 for scholarships. In return, UNM mentioned Creamland over the public address system during basketball games and in press releases, radio spots, e-mails and direct mailings to donors. "The program is unique to fund raising," notes Jada Lucey Martinez, director of the UNM Lobo Club. "I presented the program to the Mountain West Conference, and as far as I'm aware, it's the only program like it in country." Nor is Beaman aware of any similar programs statewide or nationally. The program will continue in the fall and include two carton promotions each year. UNM
