The University of New Mexico honored the family of the late Albert J. and Mary Jane Black on Feb. 27 during a dinner at historic La Quinta Cultural Center in Albuquerque's north valley. Through their wills, Albert and Mary Jane Black gifted the University with a very generous bequest, the parameters of which were finalized recently. The result is endowed scholarships at the Anderson Schools of Management and Planning along with two professorships in the area of economic development at the ASM. The bequest also established the Albert J. and Mary Jane Professorship in Hydrogeology in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. At the dinner, Department Chair Dr. Les McFadden announced the professorship and introduced its first recipient: Dr. Michael Campana, professor and Water Resources Program director. Family members attending the dinner included the Blacks' sons, Rolfe Black and wife Dorothy Wade Black, Santa Fe, and John Black and wife Joan, Albuquerque; Albert's sisters Alta Brisco and Gladys Smart and his brother Ed Black, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren Wade Black and wife Dr. Alison Black, Dallas, and Colby Black, Albuquerque, along with great niece, Amy Black, daughter of Ed Black. Albert and Mary Jane Black both attended UNM. Albert graduated in 1933 with a degree in geology. The Blacks were ranchers and general aviation pioneers establishing 7-Bar Flying Service on Albuquerque's west side. Today, 7-Bar is headquartered in Dallas with the Albuquerque office at the Albuquerque Sunport General Aviation Complex.
