Hewlett-Packard awarded the UNM College of Education (COE) a $375,000 grant in February. The college will use the grant to identify and research seven secondary schools across the United States that are "high achievers" in mathematics education-and that are located in low-income school districts. Dr. Richard Kitchen, assistant professor of mathematics education, will direct the COE research team, which will identify the top performing schools via a national competition. Each of the selected schools, as well as the college, will receive a Hewlett-Packard "wireless mobile classroom" (an all-in-one cart containing 30 wireless notebook computers, a printer/copier/scanner/fax machine, and a digital camera) valued at $100,000 for use in the study. Representatives from the selected schools will meet at the college's Technology and Education Center in early August for a project orientation. During the 2002-2003 school year, the research team will visit the schools to conduct in-depth quantitative and qualitative assessments. Finally, in fall 2003, the team will compile and publish its research, in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard and the seven schools. This award
is the second major Hewlett-Packard grant for the COE in a year, and the
largest in the history of UNM's relationship with the company. The first,
which funded a COE partnership with Bernalillo Public Schools to research
creative technology integration, was awarded in the spring of 2001.
