The President's Club Welcomes New Charter Members

One of the main University initiatives supported by The President's Club is Freshman Learning Communities. In this contemporary educational structure, tenured faculty teach a content course (a seminar) to 23 first-year students who, in the next hour, take Freshman English Composition 101, learning to write using the material presented to them in the seminar as the subject of that writing. In fall 2000, four pairs of these sections were available to 76 students. This fall 2001, 352 students are participating in 17 pairs of sections.

The results produced from the Freshman Learning Communities are impressive. Last year, students in the four Freshman Learning Communities:

  • Were retained at 90 percent at mid-year (as opposed to 85 percent for their equivalent peers)
  • Received the Lottery Scholarship at the rate of 76 percent (as opposed to 59 percent for their peers)
  • Ended the first semester with a grade point average of 3.3 (as opposed to 2.6 for their peers)

Support from The President's Club truly is making a positive difference in building a solid foundation for student success at UNM. The courses are instructor-intensive and UNM's freshman class is large--3,779 students in fall 2001. The cost associated per pair of sections is approximately $6,000.

The President's Club charter membership is now 34 individuals and couples. Charter memberships in The President's Club are available until Dec. 31, 2001. To learn about joining, call (505) 277-4503 or 1-800-UNM-FUND. The UNM Foundation would be happy to arrange a Freshman Learning Community classroom visit for interested individuals or small groups who wish to see one of the President's Fund for Academic Excellence initiatives.
