Drumming and Native Prayers Bless the Hibben Center

Frank Hibben and Bill Gordon

Through the generosity and foresight of Dr. Frank C. Hibben, the Hibben Center for Archaeological Research is now under construction. A host of friends and academic associates honored Professor Emeritus Hibben at the early summer groundbreaking.

The Ralph Zotigh Singers, a native drumming group, and Mescalero Apache medicine man Paul Ortega sang and spoke traditional blessings over the newly exposed earth.

The building site is adjacent to the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology east of Redondo Drive on the west side of the campus between the intersections of Martin Luther King Drive and Las Lomas N.E. When complete, the Hibben Center will have approximately 35,000 square feet on three levels containing archaeological/archival storage, dry laboratories, classrooms, a lecture hall, offices and support space. It will connect directly to the collections of the Maxwell Museum, of which Hibben is a founder.

A $4 million gift from the Hibben Trust is funding the building. Directors of the Hibben Trust John Perovich, Jerrell Atkinson and Alberto Guiterrez participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. Other trust directors are Robert Desidero, dean, UNM School of Law, and UNM Vice President of Advancement Judy Jones.

During the ceremony, President William C. Gordon announced that after the building costs are deducted, income from Hibben's multi million dollar independent trust will be dedicated solely to programs at the University including, but not limited to, those in archaeology and anthropology.

The Center is to be completed by June 2002.
