Dr. Gary Harrison has been appointed to serve as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, beginning October 1. In the halftime position, Dr. Harrison will supervise current student support programs, including the Teaching Assistants’ Resource Center and fellowship, scholarship, and assistantship awards. In addition, he will lead in developing new initiatives to enhance the success of our graduate and professional students. According to Dean Amy Wohlert, “We’ve made exciting plans to enhance the services we offer to students and graduate programs, and Gary has the right mix of skills and experience to make them happen. It’s going to be a very productive partnership.”

Professor Harrison comes to OGS following many years of involvement in graduate education and administration. He served over five years as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English, where he had a major role in developing comprehensive orientation and professional advisement programs for a large and ethnically diverse graduate student population. He was part of the team that developed UNM’s BA/MD program, serving first as the BA/MD Curriculum Director, then as the Student Outcomes Assessment and Program Evaluation Coordinator. He also served as Associate Chair for Curriculum in the Department of English. His many teaching awards culminated with the University’s highest award, the Presidential Teaching Fellowship, which he currently holds. A specialist in Romanticism and World literature, he has been a prolific contributor to undergraduate and graduate education and to scholarship in his discipline.
