Graduate Research Support
Graduate Research Support

The quality of our academic graduate programs is directly influenced by the quality and availability of our research centers, institutes, services and activities. As a doctoral-granting institution, it is critical that our research support is solid, current and competitive.

Many of our graduate students and faculty engage in research with the many centers and institutes on campus. The centers attract external funding for basic and applied research activity.

The Office of the Vice President for Research offers many services to seek research funding, assure compliance with federal regulations, and assist with intellectual property services.

The Office of Graduate Studies, the Graduate and Professional Student Association, and many academic departments offer various types of funding resources to support graduate student research. Support for research projects, research materials and travel to scholarly meetings are examples of support offered on a competitive basis.

MIDAS Database of Funding Sources
An online service which allows the University community to search a wide variety of databases for funding information and opportunities including grants, contracts, fellowships and sponsored support. Users can also access and search relevant funding publications via Midas Databases of Funding Sources.
Research Compliance Services (Mission Statement)
The mission of Research Compliance Services (RCS) is to facilitate and monitor main campus compliance with the range of federal policies that regulate research activities at major institutions: the responsible conduct of research, research ethics, human subjects research, the humane care of animals used in research and testing, the management of conflict of interest in research, research fraud prevention and other areas of oversight. The office for Research Compliance Services reports to the Vice President for Research on the main campus of the University of New Mexico. The RCS office provides administrative support, data base management, records and reporting assistance as well as training services to principal investigators, research centers and departments on the proper methods of conducting research in compliance with federal requirements. Major components of RCS include the Human Subjects Institutional Review Board, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and the Research Ethics Service Project.
Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB) (Mission Statement)
The University of New Mexico requires that research investigators must at all times protect the rights, privacy and welfare of individuals recruited for participation in research. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) holds the primary responsibility to protect human subjects involved in research studies conducted by departments, centers and institutes and other units on main campus. The jurisdiction of the IRB includes the authority to review, approve, modify or disapprove research protocols submitted by faculty, staff and student investigators. The process of review serves to ensure the safe and ethical conduct of research that ultimately will protect the rights and welfare of human subjects in an atmosphere of mutual trust and scientific integrity in the pursuit of knowledge. In the design, conduct, approval and review of research, investigators and the IRB adhere to the basic principles set forth in The Belmont Report: respect for persons, beneficence and justice.
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
(Mission Statement)
The University of New Mexico on the main campus established an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to review the purpose and procedures of biomedical and behavioral research with vertebrate animals. Research with animals may take many forms, including laboratory and field studies, and sometimes combinations of both. The committee ensures that the physical facilities housing research animals and that the investigators conducting the research meet the highest standards of excellence. The fundamental mission of the committee is to make certain that proposed research will not be redundant, animal pain and discomfort will be minimized, and that the researcher has carefully considered whether the research goals could be achieved without the use of live animals. The IACUC, composed of experienced researchers, veterinarians, academic non-researchers and the public, is committed to fostering rigorous, humane and ethically justified scientific research.
