Banner Usage Procedures

Before You Login to Banner

Before logging into the Banner for the first time, please read the following guidelines to avoid any connection problems.

The new version of Banner is known as Internet Native Banner (INB) and is accessed via the Internet (in this document, the terms Banner and INB are used interchangeably).    Also, references are made throughout the document to contact your campus Help Desk in case of questions.

Browser

The first time you login to Banner INB, make sure that you use Internet Explorer (IE) version 6 or higher with Service Pack 2 for Windows or Internet Explorer 5.2 for MAC OS.

You must use IE the first time you login to Banner INB as a J-Initiator (a java file) must be established on your system by the Banner client the first time you login.  Please note that Internet Explorer is the only supported browser for INB at this time. After the J-Initiator is installed on your system, you may use other web browsers in your next Banner session; however, the performance of these browsers may not be known and are not supported. For example, problems have been reported with some versions of Netscape:

4.x and 7.x.

Pop-Up Blocker

Since INB uses pop-up windows, you must turn off any pop-up blocker software that you have installed on your system when logging in to Banner.  In IE, you may allow pop-ups by following these directions:

·        Click on Tools from the main menu at the top of the browser window.  Then, select Pop-Up Blocker and Turn off Pop-Up Blocker. Please note that if you use this browser to view other sites on the Internet, pop-ups will be enabled and you could receive pop-up windows.  To avoid pop-ups from other sites, turn the Pop-Up Blocker back on once you exit out of Banner.

Site Toolbars with Pop-Up Blockers

Some sites, such as Yahoo and Google, have toolbars that usually sit under the main browser’s toolbar or main menu.  These site toolbars may also include pop-up blocker add-ons that will need to be disabled when you login to INB.

Spyware

Spyware may also cause unexpected results when you login to Banner.  Before logging in to Banner for the first time, run a spyware check using an anti-spyware application.

Monitor Resolution

In order to best view INB on your computer, your monitor resolution should be set to a minimum of 800 x 600.  To revise your settings, go to the Control Panel for your system, select the Display icon, and then select the Settings tab. You should be able to change the screen resolution on this tab.

Login to Banner

URL for Banner

https://www5.unm.edu/servlet/f60servlet?config=banp is the generic URL for Banner.

To manually update your bookmarks in IE, select Favorites from your main menu/toolbar at the top of the page.  A list of any “favorite” web sites will be displayed in the second block of the drop-down menu.  Right click on the particular web site, select Properties, and then select the Web Document tab. You will then need to type in the appropriate URL (i.e., https://www5.unm.edu/servlet/f60servlet?config=banp) in the URL field.

In Netscape, select Bookmarks from the main menu/toolbar at the tope of the page and then select Manage Bookmarks. Right click on the appropriate bookmark in the Bookmark Manager window and click Properties. Type in the appropriate URL in the Location: field and select OK.

Installing the J-Initiator

(note: Installation is not necessary if you are prompted for username and password)

Once you click on the link above or enter the secure URL in your browser the first time, a Security Alert window may open depending on whether or not J-Initiator has been installed.  Select OK.  A second Security Alert window will open asking if you want to proceed. Select Yes.

The following message bar should appear in the toolbar under the Address (URL) field at the top of the page:

“This site might require the following ActiveX control: ‘Oracle JInitiator’ from ‘Oracle Corporation’. Click here to install....”

A window will open asking if you want to install the J-Initiator software.  Click on the Install button.  An Oracle J-Initiator Setup window will open. Select the Next button when the system asks where you want to install the J-Initiator.  An Installation Complete window will open.  Click on the OK button.  You will not need to restart your computer.

A Logon window will be displayed in the middle of the Oracle Developer Forms Window. Type your Banner username and password.  The database field will be left blank unless you have been assigned a specific database.  Select Connect.

If the drop-down menus are not working in Banner, make sure that pop-ups are not blocked in your browser and any site toolbars (i.e., Google, Yahoo, MSN).
