Educating for Innovation:
Connecting UNM to the World's Challenges
It is widely agreed that innovation is the key enabler in meeting the twin challenges of increasing global competition and solving large-scale world problems in areas like energy and climate change. As has been well-documented in multiple reports, particularly the National Academy of Engineering's Rising Above the Gathering Storm, transformational changes are needed in higher education, particularly in mathematics, science, engineering, and business. Educating students to be able to innovate in response to global competition and world challenges will require new understanding and new approaches.
New Mexico is an ideal venue for Educating for Innovation. Senator Bingaman and Senator Domenici, Symposium Honorary Chairs, have played leadership roles in raising the awareness of threats to US competitiveness, the importance of innovation, the necessity of re-invigorating investment in research, and, in particular, the imperative of transforming education.
