Explore UNM Q & A

What is Explore UNM?
Explore UNM is a campus-wide open house set for Saturday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with President David J. Schmidly’s week of inaugural events.

Explore UNM serves a number of purposes and audiences.  It will be the largest recruitment, retention and relationship building effort for the 2007-08 academic year showcasing campus facilities, academics and services to both current and prospective students and their families.

What are the major activities?
A UNM Academic and Student Services Information Fair will be held on the SUB mall and plaza levels. Many schools, colleges, programs and departments may also choose to be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A festive campus picnic will be ongoing at the duck pond. The president gives a general welcome shortly after noon.

Traditionally, the university hosts several annual recruitment events designed to welcome high school seniors to campus. Those events are combined this year as Senior Day and Explore UNM. High school seniors and families register beginning at 9 a.m. The prospective student welcome and presentation begins at 10:30 a.m. in the SUB ballrooms.

Explore UNM also serves as a vehicle for Parent Day. Workshops for current students/parents/families will be offered in the SUB upper levels from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A capstone event is a lecture by national authority Marjorie Savage who presents “Mentoring Your Child During the College Years,” from 2-3 p.m. in Rodey Theatre, Center for the Arts.

How can staff, faculty and students get involved?
A number of ways to get involved exist so everyone can participate at the level they have the resources to support – from serving as a volunteer to having an exhibit at the information fair to hosting a full fledged college open house.

Join the committee of staff, faculty and students planning Senior Day and Explore UNM or ask a co-chair about how to participate. The committee is chaired by Laurie Mellas of Parent Relations, Kim Jarigese of Extended University, and Lawrence Roybal and Cheryl Wallace of the Division of Enrollment Management.
