At the
invitation of Mexican President Vicente Fox, UNM faculty traveled
to the Presidential Residence of Los Pinos in Mexico City to
witness the signing into law of the Consejo Nacional para las
Comunidades Mexicanas en el Exterior (National Council for Mexican
Communities Abroad).
Attending
from New Mexico was Federal Judge Martha Vasquez, UNM Regents
Professor Guillermina Engelbrecht, UNM Associate Professor Rebecca
Blum-Martinez and UNM doctoral student Anselmo Torres Arizmendi,
all of the College of Education. Torres is president of the
UNM Mexican Student Association.
Our
role will be to provide input into the policies developed by
the council as well as to help define the role of the Institute
for Mexican Communities Abroad, which will be the executive
organism that will implement policies developed and negotiated
by the council, said Engelbrecht of UNMs involvement.
