Hanging
of the Greens: New tradition begins
Hanging of the Greens has opened the holiday season at
UNM since students in the 1930s traveled to the Sandia
Mountains to cut greenery used to decorate the Student
Union ballroom.
As
in years past, student organizations on Friday, Dec. 6
will decorate the campus with thousands of luminarias.
But
for the first time, the UNM community will be invited
to visit Scholes Hall from 4:30 to 6 p.m. to enjoy refreshments
and entertainment. Members of the UNM Opera Theatre will
perform. Carolers and Mortar Board members will gather
at the Alumni Chapel at 6 p.m. and then wind their way
across campus stopping first to sing at Scholes Hall.
At
7 p.m. University House will open to all. The Mortar Board
will present the traditional wreath of greens to President
F. Chris and Mrs. Sandy Garcia followed by a Las Posadas
presentation by the Theatre Department.
