Students
with disabilities policy out for review through Dec. 19
Vice President
for Business and Finance Julie Weaks Gutierrez and the UNM Executive
Cabinet are asking students, faculty and staff members to carefully
evaluate and comment on the proposed policy statement 2310 Academic
Adjustments for Students with Disabilities.
Comments
should be sent to Weaks Gutierrezs office or via e-mail
to ubppm@unm.edu by Dec. 19. The proposed draft is available
to UNM students, faculty and staff accessing the UNM web page
through UNM computers. The URL is http://www.unm.edu/~ubppm/ubpoffice/2310mem.htm
A committee
composed of representatives from Accessibility Services, the
Office of Equal Opportunity, Student Health Services, Academic
Affairs, Health Sciences Center Risk Management, University
Counsel, the Policy Office, and an undergraduate student, developed
the policy to provide guidelines to students, faculty and staff
on the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1990 in relation to academic adjustments.
The committee
reviewed policies from other colleges and universities, applicable
laws, and current UNM practices and solicited input from individuals
working with students with disabilities, the Faculty Senate
Operations Committee, Deans' Council, and Executive Cabinet.
The proposed
policy incorporates the processes currently used at UNM and
appeal procedures with an emphasis on expeditious processing
due to the time-sensitive needs of students.
