By Susan Carkeek

Happy New Year and welcome back! I trust that all of you enjoyed your winter break. The start of the New Year brings many tasks and one is completion of Performance Reviews.

The Performance Review and Recognition Policy (#3230) focuses on improving performance, increasing positive communication and mutual respect and promoting individual growth and career development. The Performance Review process is more than an annual event. It is intended to create ongoing communication between supervisors and employees that emphasizes these five components:

Plan – Set goals and develop standards for performance
Coach – Give regular feedback on performance
Review –Develop a written, narrative evaluation
Reward – Provide feedback, recognition and pay for performance
Support – Help employees reach goals and improve performance

Supervisors must complete a Performance Review Form for every regular employee who reports to them. This includes employees who are covered by a bargaining unit. The Performance Review Form is used for two purposes: planning for the upcoming year and reviewing performance for the past year. This review should be completed between January and March. The deadline for completed reviews is March 31.

Employee and Organizational Development (EOD) offers regular workshops on the Performance Review Process. The Workshop Calendar can be viewed at http://www.unm.edu/~hrinfo/. More information can also be found on the Human Resources Web site at http://www.unm.edu/~hr/. Follow the Performance Review Link on the left. If you have any specific questions, please contact your HR consultant. If you need the name of your consultant, contact the HR Service Center at 277-MyHR (277-6947).
