Benefits package offers discounts

By Susan Carkeek

The University of New Mexico is well known for providing an excellent benefits package. In fact, it is one of the main reasons that individuals seek employment with us and why many employees remain here throughout their careers. Although the focus is often on health insurance and retirement, I wanted to remind you that as a UNM faculty or staff member you are also eligible for many discounted services with our community partners. Memberships are available at Defined Fitness, Gold’s Gym and New Mexico Sports and Wellness at a reduced cost. Season tickets to Lobo Athletics are half-price as are season tickets to the Ovation Series at Popejoy Hall. Employees can also receive discounts on massages, cell phones, work uniforms, and LASIK eye surgery.

One program that has been particularly successful is our program with La Petite Academy. UNM employees are eligible to receive a 10 percent discount off full time tuition for children ages 2-12. Currently, 41 UNM faculty and staff are collectively saving more than $12,424 a year using this discounted service. This program began in 2000 with only seven participants. It has grown over the past three years to as high as 60 participants. Enrollees in the La Petite Academy program, which includes the Mountain View Academy, can save up to $15 a week. This translates to an annual savings of up to $780 for a family with two children enrolled at La Petite Academy.

If you are interested in learning more about these discounted services as well as any of our other excellent benefits, visit our Web site at http://www.unm.edu/~hr/ and click on the Benefits link. The information is updated continuously.

Questions about these programs as well as any of our benefits can be answered by our staff at the HR Service Center, call 277-MyHR (6347).
