Open enrollment begins May 3

By Susan Carkeek

UNM’s Annual Health Insurance Open Enrollment will take place Monday, May 3, through Wednesday, May 19. At this time, all benefits eligible faculty and staff will have the opportunity to make changes to their existing medical, dental and/or vision coverage and to elect to have their premiums taken from their paychecks on a pre-tax or after-tax basis. Any changes employees make during Open Enrollment will take effect on July 1 and be effective through June 30, 2005.

UNM will continue to offer the same health plans we currently have - Lovelace HMO, Lovelace POS (Point-of-Service), Presbyterian HMO, and both Cimarron plans. Unfortunately, the premiums for all of our health plans have increased. These increases range from a low of $6.13 per month (Lovelace HMO employee only), to a high of $61.83 per month (Presbyterian Family Plan). Even with these increases, UNM’s health plan premiums remain a good deal compared to those offered by many comparable organizations in the state.

Because the increases in our premiums will vary so greatly this year, employees are strongly encouraged to review their Open Enrollment materials very carefully and to seriously consider the alternatives offered. Open Enrollment materials will be mailed to all benefits eligible employees the week of April 26. All of the information will also be placed on our Web site at http://www.unm.edu/~hr/whatsnew/.

For those employees who have questions about their benefits, we have scheduled eight, health information sessions that will take place during Open Enrollment. Representatives from our insurance carriers will be available at each of these sessions to speak with individuals about their specific needs. We will also have representatives from the Department of Human Resources on hand to answer your questions.

We hope everyone will attend one of these sessions. The times and locations of these sessions can also be found on the HR Web site at http://www.unm.edu/~hr/whatsnew/.
