Scholarly journals discussed

The UNM community is invited to the third annual Symposium on Scholarly Communication: Cultural Transformation of the University’s Knowledge Base, set for Thursday, March 3, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in SUB ballroom A.

The symposium seeks to address serious problems in the way scholarly information is dispersed through technical journals. “As the unit cost of serials in major research libraries soared, libraries were forced to cancel millions of dollars worth of subscriptions, said University of Illinois Librarian Mary Case.

The keynote speaker is Paul Courant, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at the University of Michigan. He will speak about the institutional implications of building and sustaining cyberinfrastructure. He will also touch on his work with the Google project.
