The UNM School of Medicine lost a leader and a champion Feb. 10. John L. “Jack” Omdahl, Ph.D., died.
Faculty in the UNM department of biochemistry and molecular biology since 1972 and senior associate dean of research in the school of medicine since 2002, he was a recognized leader in research and education and the winner of prestigious awards in both arenas. Omdahl was a champion of faculty rights, having served two terms as president of the faculty senate and as chairman of the UNM academic freedom and tenure committee. He was also president of the New Mexico Heart Association for two terms and an active member of East Mountain Calvary Chapel Church.
“His personal warmth and commitment to excellence touched all who were fortunate enough to have worked with him, students, fellows, and colleagues,” noted Vice President Philip Eaton, adding, “his wisdom, courage and integrity have left permanent marks upon the university, which is a better place for the service he gave.”
