David J. Beining, who has served as interim director of the Lodestar Astronomy Center (LAC) since 2000, assumed the directorship on a permanent basis May 1, announced Dupuy Bateman, UNM associate vice president for Auxiliary Enterprises.

UNM operates the LAC in partnership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Beining's responsibilities include directing the development and implementation of science education programs.

"David has been associated with Lodestar since its inception and, in fact, directed the development of the facility and its exhibits, outreach activity and other educational programs. We are looking forward to his continued leadership," Bateman said.

"I feel privileged to continue growing Lodestar as a vital and vibrant educational resource within our community...Lodestar's programs and facilities, especially the planetarium/domed-theater...have tremendous potential for...distribution to other institutions around the globe," Beining said.
