U.S. Attorney to Speak at UNM
David Iglesias, U.S. attorney for the district of New Mexico will talk about public service as a career alternative on Tuesday, April 11 at 2 p.m. in the Acoma Room of the Student Union Building on UNM's main campus. Iglesias' speech is part of a speaker's series sponsored by the Partnership for Public Service at Career Services. Iglesias, a graduate from the UNM School of Law was nominated as U.S. attorney by President George Bush in 2001.
Iglesias has served as a member of the U.S. Attorney General's Advisory Committee and chaired the subcommittee on border and immigration. He served on active duty as a U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General officer between 1985 and 1988 at the pentagon and Naval Legal Service office in Washington D.C. He was a defense counselor in a Guantanamo Bay, Cuba court martial that inspired the movie, “A Few Good Men.”
After leaving active duty in 1988, Iglesias served as a state assistant attorney general in the special prosecutions unit, and headed legal offices in the Albuquerque City Attorney's office, State Risk Management and the Taxation and Revenue Department.
Iglesias served as a white house fellow in 1994 and served as a special assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He returned to active duty in 1999 where he served on staff at fifth fleet headquarters in Bahrain and on board the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch. Iglesias is a reserve captain in the U.S. Navy where he serves as where he serves as commanding officer of a unit of navy prosecutors.
