Graduate Fellows Research Opens Archival Collections

Four graduate fellows funded by the Center for Regional Studies will give short presentations about their projects working with archival collections at the Center for Southwest Research on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the Willard Reading Room of Zimmerman Library on the UNM main campus.

Valerie Rangel will discuss and demonstrate the “Western Waters Digital Library.” This is a collaborative regional project created by twelve university libraries in eight western states. The University of New Mexico 's contribution to this project includes digitization of historical source materials about rivers, irrigation, ecology, and the economic impact of water resources on communities in New Mexico, primarily along the Rio Grande .

Kari Schleher's presentation is “Early Albuquerque Photos in the Digital Age: The Digitization of the Cobb Memorial Collection, 1880-1942.” This project involves digitization of photographs, primarily in and around Albuquerque between 1885 and 1942.

Theresa Córdova's talk is titled, “Festival Performances of Robert Martinez y Los Reyes de Albuquerque: An Archival Recovery Project.” Her work relates to the John Donald Robb Archives of Southwestern Music.

Ellen Evans-Colburn will speak on “New Mexico Architects: Contributions Great and Small-Current Biographical Summaries.” Her work has been in the John Gaw Meem Architectural Archives.

Each fellow will speak for about fifteen minutes. The fellows' projects will result in improved access to special collections materials for researchers.
