UNM Organizes Sin Fronteras Film Festival
Campus panels, first film screening free to public

More than 40 film projects on the topics of social and political justice, arts and culture, literary adaptations and mass appeal will be screened at the 2006 Sin Fronteras Film Festival and Conference in Albuquerque Thursday, April 20, through Sunday, April 23. Academic and industry panels will be offered free to the public at the University of New Mexico Arts Lab Garage, 131 Pine N.E.

The only New Mexico festival to exclusively feature Latino films and filmmakers, the fourth annual program includes film shorts, documentaries, features and animated pieces hailing from South America, Central America, Mexico, Cuba, Spain and the U.S., as well as a block of films from the Los Angeles' Cine Sin Fin festival.

Organized by the UNM Student Organization for Latin American Studies (SOLAS) and UNM Arts of the Americas Institute in the College of Fine Arts, new aspects of the festival include an emphasis on filmmakers, scholarly work and awards for best films.

Screening venues include UNM, the KiMo Theatre, National Hispanic Cultural Center 's Bank of America Film Center and the festival's main stage, the Guild Cinema.

The festival opens with a free screening of the Chilean feature, “Machuca,” Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m. at the KiMo Theatre. Festival passes are $15 for students and $25 adults and are available at Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com or 883-7800, at the NHCC Box Office, 724-4771, and at Alphaville Video, 256-8243. Tickets for individual screenings can be purchased at the door.

On Friday, April 21 at noon, a panel discussion and book signing features two film scholars – Rogelio Agrasanchez, Jr., director of the Agrasanchez Mexican Film Archives and author of “Cine Mexicano: Poster Art from the Golden Age/Carteles de la Epoca de Oro 1936-1956,” and UNM Media Arts instructor Carl Mora, author of “Mexican Cinema: Reflections of a Society, 1896-2004.”
