Sin Fronteras Film Festival, Conference Features Latino Work
The 2006 Sin Fronteras Film Festival and Conference will be held in Albuquerque April 20-23. The festival is accepting film submissions through Feb. 15.
Sin Fronteras is New Mexico's premier Latino/a festival presenting the voice and vision of the Americas showcasing documentaries and short and feature films by Latino filmmakers, or with Latino-themed content. In its fourth year, new aspects of the festival include an emphasis on filmmakers and scholarly work and awards for best films.
The University of New Mexico Student Organization for Latin American Studies (SOLAS) and UNM Arts of the Americas Institute in the College of Fine Arts collaborated on the events to be held at several venues, including UNM, the KiMo Theatre, National Hispanic Cultural Center's Bank of America Film Center and Guild Cinema.
Social justice, arts and culture, literary adaptations, mass appeal and political themes will be represented in this year's screenings. Works from the Americas, Spain and Mexico will be featured, as will films made in New Mexico by local filmmakers.
“We are building a film festival that we hope will receive international recognition,” said Dorothy Baca, director of the festival and UNM Arts of the Americas Institute.
The role of Hispanics in film, both in front of and behind the camera, will be examined in conference proceedings, free and open to the public. New discussions about digital media and Spanish-speaking cultures will emerge. Panelists include Mexican cinema and criticism scholars, filmmakers from Latin America and the American Southwest, as well as industry professionals and local filmmakers. Technical demonstrations will be presented at the UNM ARTS Lab Digital Media Garage, a state of the art production and teaching facility on UNM's main campus.
The City of Albuquerque, National Hispanic Cultural Center, UNM ARTS Lab and College of Fine Arts are among the sponsors.
