UNM Student and San Cristobal Native Receives Fulbright Scholarship

Julia Gilroy, a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, hailing from San Cristobal, New Mexico, received a Fulbright/Garcia-Robles Bi-National Business grant allowing her to live, work and study in Mexico for ten months. She will do an internship with a multi-national company that has yet to be determined.

“I'm hoping to work with a non-profit company that focuses on economic development via Mexican business development, because that is an area I'm very interested in,” Gilroy said. “However any bi-national/multi-national company is going to be a good experience and will provide me with a lot of information about Mexico's role in the global economy.”

Gilroy will attend business and economic development classes at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México. She will complete her master's in economics this summer, focusing her thesis on the importance of technical education within the labor market.

After attending Taos High and Middle Schools, Gilroy decided to attend UNM because of its diversity, accessible faculty and high quality programs. UNM's study abroad programs are an “invaluable” component of her education, she said. She participated in Conexiones, a UNM study abroad program, which took her to Mexico .

“Conexiones really pushes students to be engaged travelers, not to simply be tourists, but to venture out and experience a country's traditions, culture and lifestyle,” Gilroy said.

Gilroy studied economics and Spanish at UNM and was in the Honors Program. She said her ability to compete nationally for the Fulbright was due to encouragement from faculty and notable courses in economics, Spanish and the Honors Program.

“I'm thankful that I received an education that helped me develop a broad understanding and respect for our global community,” Gilroy said.
