UNM Libraries Presents ‘Indian Education Across the Chalkboard'
University Libraries and the Indigenous Nations Library Program presents its March lecture titled “Indian Education Across the Chalkboard.” It will focus on the importance of a solid, all encompassing Indian education from early childhood to higher education.
The lecture is Tuesday, March 28, 2006. The brown bag discussion is from noon to 1 p.m. in room 102. The panel discussion is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Willard Reading room. Both events are in Zimmerman Library on the UNM main campus.
Invited speakers include Mary Jiron Belgarde, an associate professor in the Department of Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies in UNM's College of Education. Belgarde is well versed in building charter schools for American Indian students. Also joining the panel is Rosemary Blanchard, the dean of instruction at Crownpoint Institute of Technology in Crownpoint, N.M., located on the Navajo reservation. Natalie Martinez, a teacher at Independence High School in Rio Rancho, N.M., represents Indian education in public schools and urban settings. Mateo Sanchez, director of the San Felipe Pueblo Department of Education, will provide education strategies at the pueblo.
