FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNM'S Zimmerman Library Closed to All Public Access

There will be no access to Zimmerman Library on the UNM main campus through tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2, 2006, as library officials ascertain the extent of damage from a fire that broke out Sunday night in the basement periodicals section.

Though the fire was contained to that section, smoke permeated the entire building. It will be tomorrow afternoon before decisions can be made as to what sections of Zimmerman can reopen and when.

Library administrators will be available at 3 p.m. today (Monday, May 1) at Centennial library to answer what questions they can about damage to the periodicals section and efforts to ramp up the interlibrary loan system to accommodate students preparing for finals.

With Zimmerman closed, arrangements have been made to provide special study areas in the Student Union Building through midnight tomorrow. Centennial Science and Engineering Library and Parrish Library will both be on extended hours until midnight tomorrow.

The University of New Mexico is the state's largest university, serving more than 32,000 students.
