Governor Declares Nov. 13-17 Int'l Education Week
UNM, higher education leaders developing K-12 int'l ed policy
Governor Bill Richardson has declared Nov. 13-17, 2006, “International Education Week,” according to a proclamation issued recently. Richardson encourages “all citizens to recognize the important role that international education plays in our lives and communities.”
International education and exchange includes thousands of public and private programs, some campus-based and others that are national, that promote sharing ideas and experiences across borders, he declared.
The programs include study abroad, citizen and scholarly exchanges, foreign students on U.S. campuses, area and foreign language studies and global approaches to U.S. education, the proclamation reads.
Participation in these programs helps students develop greater appreciation and respect for other people and their cultures and fosters understanding and cooperation essential to peace and prosperity, Richardson declared.
Improving global literacy contributes significantly to the strength of U.S. foreign policy, economic competitiveness and national security in an increasingly interconnected world, the proclamation reads.
Tom Bogenschild, University of New Mexico Director of the Office of International Programs and Studies, said that the governor's proclamation parallels initiatives UNM and other New Mexico universities are developing to create a policy for international education for both K-12 and higher education.
“We appreciate the governor for recognizing the importance of international education. We look forward to working with him and his office to develop a policy,” Bogenschild said.
