UNM College Assistance Migrant Program Funded for Additional Five Years
Program receives $1.9 Million
UNM's College Assistance Migrant Program, or CAMP, has been funded by the Department of Education's Office of Migrant Education for an additional five years. CAMP is an arm of the College Enrichment and Outreach Programs in the Division of Students Affairs.
CAMP will receive $1,892,859 over a five-year funding cycle, which began Oct. 1. The program recruits first generation and/or low income incoming freshmen with an agricultural background (the student or student's parents have worked in a seasonal or migrant occupation in the past two years). Students are awarded scholarships up to $1500 per semester during their first two semesters and receive textbooks required for classes. Students also participate in workshops designed to help develop skills to succeed in the university environment. Each student is provided with a personal tutor and CAMP advisor. In order to stay connected to their social and academic support system, students also take part in social and cultural activities organized for CAMP participants.
Associate Vice President for College Enrichment and Outreach Programs Tim Gutierrez oversees the CAMP program, which is under the direction of a program specialist within Gutierrez's area.
“It is admirable that the UNM CAMP program has been re-funded to the tune of almost $1.9 million to serve the migrant student population of our state,” said Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, vice president for Student Affairs. “These students are mostly from the agricultural regions in the southern part of New Mexico, and those who have become part of CAMP have proven to be hardworking and dedicated students in carrying out and completing their academic training.”
