No Child Left Behind Report Urges Schools Not to Leave Parents Behind
Appleseed of New Mexico/UNM study calls for more parental involvement, notification
Appleseed of New Mexico, a non-profit affiliate a national network of public interest law centers, including the University of New Mexico Institute of Public Law, will hold a press conference Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 10:30 a.m.
Officials will discuss a comprehensive evaluation of parent involvement in the public schools, with special attention to the No Child Left Behind Act.
The event will feature New Mexico Senator Cisco McSorley, executive director of Appleseed Of New Mexico, who is known for his strong support of K-12 education, along with UNM IPL Director Paul Biderman and Frank Kessel of the UNM Department of Individual, Family and Community Education, Early Childhood Multicultural Education at the College of Education.
Appleseed's report, titled, It Takes A Parent: Transforming Education in the Wake of the No Child Left Behind Act, finds that districts, federal officials and state policymakers need to expand efforts to ensure NCLB's parent provisions are followed and that parents are enlisted as a key resource in reducing achievement gaps and to help all students succeed.
