Lord Woolf to Present ' Ramo Lecture on International Law and Justice' at UNM

The Right Honourable Lord Henry Woolf will present the 2006 Ramo Lecture on International Law and Justice, a free, public event, at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Thursday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. in the Law School Forum, 1117 Stanford NE.

A reception, sponsered by Modrall Sperling Law Firm, will follow. Free parking is available in the law school's “L” lot.

Lord Woolf served as Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 2000 until retiring late last year. In his lecture, "Standing up for Justice," he will discuss dramatic changes to the English legal system during his career and address their relevance to the United States and United Kingdom . He will talk about the current involvement of the U.K. and U.S. in other parts of the world and how terrorist threats test legal systems in both countries. He will also explain how the rule of law factors into a successful democracy and economy.

Immediately following his retirement, Lord Woolf conducted a review of the working methods of the European Court of Human Rights, presenting a report on his findings last December. At the same time, he became the UK 's representative to the " Group of Wise Persons ," whose task is to draw up a comprehensive strategy to secure the long-term effectiveness of the European Convention on Human Rights. He also joined Blackstone Chambers , where he is pursuing a longstanding interest in alternative dispute resolution and mediation.

The son of a builder and architect, Lord Woolf earned an LLB at University College London and became a barrister in 1954. An outspoken advocate of prison reform, he played a significant role in the development of alternative dispute resolution in England, civil law reform and is a joint editor of a standard textbook on judicial review.

He has received honorary degrees from 12 universities, including London , Oxford , Cambridge and Malaya . Lord Woolf is an author, and also teaches and lectures. He holds a number of international appointments, including as a non-permanent judge on the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong.

The Ramo Lecture on International Justice was established in 2004 through a gift by Roberta Cooper Ramo and Dr. Barry Ramo.
