UNM Indian Law Convocation set for Sept. 14

The University of New Mexico School of Law's Indian Law Program will host the 13th annual Indian People/Indian Law Academic Convocation and Gathering of Communities, Thursday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. at the law school, rm. 2401.

The convocation honors the law school's Native American community and Indian law students. Special recognition will be given to UNM Law Professor Gloria Valencia-Weber and UNM Regent Sandra Begay-Campbell for providing exemplary academic leadership benefiting the program.

“We presently have 40 native students representing 25 Indian nations. Nine students are from the Navajo Nation and six come from five different New Mexico Pueblos,” said John P. LaVelle, professor of law and Indian Law Program director.

The School of Law also has its largest number to date of non-Indian students studying Indian law and participating in the Native American Law Students Association.

“This annual convocation reaffirms the law school's commitment to educating American Indian law students and teaching Indian law to all of our students,” LaVelle said.

For information and to RSVP, contact Mitzi Vigil, Indian Law Program Coordinator, 277-0405.
