Statement from acting University of New Mexico President David Harris
RE: Theft at UNM Bookstore

At the request of UNM Bookstore management, the UNM Police have been investigating incidents of suspicious behavior involving theft and receipt of stolen Bookstore property.  The continuing investigation has uncovered what appears to be significant loss of merchandise and monetary value and involves alleged wrongdoing by several student employees.  The matter has been turned over to the District Attorney's Office for review and appropriate action.

The University of New Mexico is taking this matter very seriously.  Students who are found to be involved will be subject to the student disciplinary process.  The University will also be seeking restitution of lost property.

It is important to note that updated security systems at the Bookstore uncovered the suspicious activity and led to the investigation.  There will be an additional security review and an internal audit to insure that best security and business practices are being upheld.

This is a matter of great concern to the University and it is being dealt with appropriately and expeditiously both internally and thru the criminal justice system.

It is important that we take this opportunity to reaffirm with our students that there are applicable laws and student codes of conduct and that there will be consequences when the laws and codes are not followed.
