UNM Parking & Transportation to Host Alternative Transportation Fair April 23, 2007

UNM Parking & Transportation Services will host an Alternative Transportation Fair on the Cornell Mall in front of the Student Union Building on Monday, April 23, 2007 from 11 am to 2 pm. The purpose of the fair is to help students, faculty, and staff learn about available alternative transportation options and benefits, and find out more about how they can be supported in their efforts to utilize these options. Alternative transportation is defined as any way of commuting other than the single-occupancy vehicle (“SOV”) method – that is, one person, one car.

As Parking and Transportation Services Director Clovis Acosta explains, “Parking and Transportation Services is taking a proactive approach in dealing with the effects of global warming, the inevitable rise in parking fees, and the depletion of available parking spaces as construction booms on campus. I think people really want to be able to do their part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, not to mention reducing their commuting costs, but they don’t know how they might be able to make that work into their daily routine.”

To be of further service to the campus community, UNM Parking and Transportation Services is now providing a new service to the campus, serving as a Commuter Advisory Station. People can discuss their particular issues about commuting to campus with a commuter specialist, who will be able to advise them of the various options, and even cost-saving benefits, which might be available to them as users of alternative transportation.

Participants at the fair will include:

VPSI Commuter Vanpool – UNM Parking and Transportation Services will be offering vanpool coordination to employees. VPSI will be on-site with a van and information about starting a vanpool. Vanpooling reduces commuting costs, promotes good air quality, and UNM is able to offer enrollees the opportunity to use automatic deduction, pre-tax dollars to pay for their monthly service fees.

UNM Police Department will hold their annual bicycle auction. Viewing begins at 8:30 am, and the auction will start at 11 am.

UNM Recreational Services will have a bicycle tune-up station

A representative from the Biology Department’s Sustainability Stud ies program will be on hand to show off their new bio-fuel minivan and discuss carbon emissions issues

ABQ Ride and New Mexico Rail Runner Express will have information available about their services.

Bicycle Safety Education and Advocacy

And much more

All events will be on the Cornell Mall in front of the SUB. Please contact Parking and Transportation Services at 277-0461 for further information regarding this event.
