UNM Space Technology Forum Seeks to Inspire a New Generation

Sixteen student teams from New Mexico and Colorado will be showing their proposals for a Mars mobile laboratory in the 19th Annual Space Design Competition at the Hotel Albuquerque on Monday, February 12, from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. The competition is open to students in the 6th through 12th grades.

The student competition is just one element of the 2007 Space Technology and Applications International Forum, organized by the University of New Mexico’s Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies. This year’s theme is “Space Renaissance: Inspiring the Next Generation.” The conference, which runs from Feb. 11 – 15, is an international forum to discuss the latest advances in space technology.

The supporting organizations for the conference are sponsoring undergraduate students from throughout the United States. The students will work as pages for the presenters in the 65 technical sessions.

Of particular interest this year is a 6:30 p.m. plenary session on Wednesday, February 14. The presentation by the Chair of the Division of Space History at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Roger D. Launius, will feature the three great ages of human exploration, from the seagoing era of the European Renaissance through today’s quest to explore environments where artificial apparatus is required for survival.

The conference is organized by the UNM Institute for Space and Nuclear Power Studies, (ISNPS) led by Regents’ Professor Mohamed S. El-Genk. Sponsors for the conference include The Boeing Company, Idaho National Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Sandia National Laboratories, Northrop Grumman Space Technology, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The public is welcome. Daily registration fee is $395. Conference registration is $595. A detailed program and information about the speakers can be found at http://www.unm.edu/~isnps/staifhome.html

If you have specific questions about the conference, please contact ISNPS-UNM at (505) 277-0446.
