Mark Emmons to Receive University Libraries Faculty Acknowledgement Award
Associate Professor of Library Science Mark Emmons will deliver a short lecture titled “On Film and Television and the Relevance of Print Bibliographies in the Digital Era” as part of a Faculty Acknowledgement Award event on May 17, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Willard Room of Zimmerman Library.
University Libraries is honoring Emmons for his contribution to scholarly knowledge. His book, “Film and Television: a Guide to the Reference Literature,” has been listed on College & Research Libraries “Selected Reference Works” and named an American Library Association CHOICE “Outstanding Academic Title” for 2006.
Emmons has a lifelong passion for film, which led him to work briefly in the film and television industry immediately after graduating from UCLA in 1983. He realized he liked watching films more than making them and moved on to teaching and librarianship.
His film and television credits include “Going Bananas,” a live action television show from Hanna Barbera featuring an orangutan named Roxana Banana, and movies “The Mission…Kill,” “Space Rage” and Friday the 13 th, Part V.”
As a librarian, he coordinates Information Literacy & Instruction Services. Film is only a very small part of his job – though in his career he has selected books and films for library collections, taught students how to conduct research and answered reference questions about film and television. Before and since writing “Film and Television,” he has written chapters on film resources and how to teach film research to undergraduates.
The lecture is free and the public is welcome.
