UNM Names Vice President for Enrollment Management

University of New Mexico President David J. Schmidly has announced the appointment of Carmen Alvarez Brown to the position of vice president for Enrollment Management. This new position will consolidate service areas that impact students’ progression toward their degree objective. The offices of recruitment, admissions, financial aid, records and registration will report to the vice president. Additionally, the vice president will work closely with the university community to improve recruitment, enrollment and graduation of all students.

“There is nothing more important to this university than the success of its students,” Schmidly said. “We want to remove roadblocks that may hamper their journey from admission through graduation. Carmen will bring a rare energy to the task.”

Alvarez Brown is currently assistant vice president for Enrollment Management and director of Undergraduate Admissions at Florida International University. She brings more than 35 years of administrative experience in enrollment management and establishment and successful execution of recruitment and enrollment strategies for students of diverse backgrounds. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies and a master’s in Adult Education from FIU.

Prior to her current appointments, Alvarez Brown served at FIU as director of admissions from 1989-2002, state articulating officer from 1990-98, associate director of admissions from 1984-89, director of international and graduate admissions from 1976-84, coordinator for international admissions from 1974-76, and admissions evaluator from 1972-1974. She also served the U.S. Agency for International Development Presidential Training Initiative for the Island Caribbean/United School of America Contractors as program manager from 1987-88 and training development specialist from 1986-87.

Alvarez Brown will begin her duties at UNM this summer.
