Put simply, too many of our students drop out in their first year, and too few aren't graduating after six years— and one of the big culprits, in my opinion, is our approach to tuition.

When son Casey, a University of New Mexico graduate student in playwriting, was assigned to create a play last year out of a picture book, he considered the work of his father when selecting the tale of a young bullfighter in territorial northern New Mexico.

5. College Fair Will Be Held Saturday (Albuquerque Journal)

A college fair and free workshop to help students prepare for college will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at Albuquerque High School.

The fair, hosted by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, will include representatives from universities and vocational programs across the country.

The workshop portion is designed to help students finish high school prepared to continue their education. It will include tips on preparing and paying for college, studying for standardized tests, choosing a school, writing personal statements and researching financial aid. Workshops will be held for parents on paying for college and helping teens with preparation. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and prizes will be raffled, including an iPod Shuffle.

6. Former Lobo Assistants Identified in NCAA Case (Albuquerque Journal)

Former New Mexico assistants Lenny Rodriguez and Grady Stretz have been implicated in an academic fraud investigation, The Associated Press has learned, and both are expected to attend a NCAA infractions committee hearing today.

The hearing is in Indianapolis, where New Mexico athletic director Paul Krebs will lead a five-member university delegation that includes president David Schmidly and head coach Rocky Long.

7. Rugby to Take Over at Balloon Fiesta Park (Albuquerque Journal)

The sport of rugby, coming this weekend to a Balloon Fiesta Park near you, is growing faster than your next-door neighbor's St. Bernard puppy.

"High school rugby is blowing up," said Sara John, director of communications for USA Rugby.

"Youth rugby is blowing up. Women's collegiate rugby, huge. In the different realms (of the game), they're saying it's averaging about 8 percent growth a year."
