2. UNM Groups Host Anti-Violence Event (Albuquerque Journal)

A coalition of student groups at the University of New Mexico is hosting a "Take Back the Night" event tonight in response to violent acts against women and abortion clinics.

The event which includes speakers and a candlelight vigil will run from 6 to 10 p.m. at Johnson Field. Together, we will shatter the silence about rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse, domestic violence and attacks on abortion clinics, such as the fire that took place in December of 2007," the coalition said in a news release.

The event is open to the public, said Molly Maguire-Marshall, a spokeswoman for the group.

Also planned is a Clothesline Project, where women are given a chance to write about violent experiences on T-shirts, which are then hung on a clothesline for everyone to read.

The event is hosted by the UNM Reproductive Justice Coalition, which is made up of UNM organizations Vox, the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and NARAL Pro-Choice UNM.

3. Column: Schmidly needs to be candid (Daily Lobo)
By: Richard M. Berthold / Daily Lobo columnist

Every Monday morning, I receive an e-mail from President David Schmidly - the entire University does.

This is good.

He is the first UNM president to engage in a regular communication with all of us, including retired farts like myself. The letters are like a 21st-century version of Roosevelt's fireside chats.

Unfortunately, it is all happy talk, and what the faculty, students and staff require, I suspect, is straight talk about the many problems the University confronts. Schmidly apparently saves the serious stuff for letters to the Albuquerque Journal when negative publicity about the University compels him to respond.
