UNM PRESIDENT David Schmidly's desire to freeze tuition for students who graduate in four years reflects a double failure in leadership.
He fails to recognize that an increasing proportion of students in state universities like UNM prefer to graduate in more than four years. A true leader would capitalize on this trend and tailor UNM's educational programs to fit the needs of his students, who are older working adults, many of whom have young children.
I would suggest that Schmidly enroll in some classes as I have done to see first-hand how his classmates juggle work, family life and education, and perhaps attend a conference on the trends in higher education.
Even if we assume that Schmidly's desire to motivate students to graduate in four years is worthy, he fails to offer an appropriate incentive for students to realize his goal.
Since the lottery pays the tuition in the first two years, Schmidly's plan would freeze student tuition in the remaining two years. This incentive amounts to total savings of about $500, or $250 a year assuming a 5 percent tuition hike per year.
Would a student give up a good job or miss her daughter's birthday for Schmidly's incentive? I think not.
We get the failed leadership we deserve. With members of the Board of Regents, who can sell us an insurance policy or put us in a car with no money down, things could be a lot worse.

3. SPEAK UP! (Albuquerque Journal)
REGARDING the statement that “UNM is one of the best bargains in higher education,” I wonder if the age-old adage “you get what you pay for” has been totally forgotten or just conveniently neglected? J.W.G.
I’VE GONE to great lengths to reduce junk mail. I’ve revised my address with CNM to receive my graduation materials. And viola, I get a letter from New Mexico State offering its fine services. I’ve gone to CNM’s registration center and they always claim that they give out no personal information. NMSU would have absolutely no way of knowing I would graduate from CNM unless that information was provided by CNM. T.M.

4. Basketball team can no longer afford gym (Daily Lobo)
By: Caity BergerA local wheelchair basketball team said it cannot afford to continue practicing at Johnson Gym.
For the past four years, the Albuquerque Kings have paid $500 to practice at Johnson Center's south gym for each session, said Jake Schmalzriedt, a forward on the team.
But members will have to dish out an extra $300 each session if they want to continue playing at the gym, he said.
Roger Wrolstad, manager of Johnson Center, said he's only being fair.
Nonstudent organizations pay $800 to rent the south gym for half a day and $1,500 for a full day, Wrolstad said.
