By Martin Salazar, Journal Staff Writer

State and national leaders will converge on New Mexico State University's Las Cruces campus starting today for the inaugural Domenici Public Policy Conference, which will run through Friday.

The conference will focus on issues important to retiring Sen. Pete Domenici, including behavioral health, national security, the federal budget and nuclear nonproliferation. It is part of the Pete V. Domenici legacy project, a statewide effort to honor the longtime Republican senator.

Among those slated to take part in the conference are Domenici, Sen. Chris Dodd, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, Sen. Jeff Bingaman, Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima, interim NMSU President Waded Cruzado and Louisiana State University Chancellor and former NMSU President Michael Martin. It will conclude with a free concert by Randy Travis. The university will broadcast all conference sessions online via a Web cast available at domenici.nmsu.edu.

The conference starts today with registration and student panels, with major events to be held Thursday and Friday.
