2. UNM builds stroke-help network (Albuquerque Journal)
By Olivier Uyttebrouck, Journal Staff Writer

Time is critical when a stroke patient turns up at a hospital emergency room.

A brain starved of blood begins to die within minutes. Aggressive treatments can save lives but diagnosis is tricky, particularly at small hospitals that lack neurological specialists.

A solution, University of New Mexico physicians say, is to build a statewide network led by a team of stroke specialists available around the clock to help emergency room physicians choose appropriate treatments.

9. The Cornerstones (Albuquerque Journal)
Fate of Season Could Be Up to Wright and Quin

By Greg Archuleta, Journal Staff Writer

The difference between good and great this season for the University of New Mexico defense — and for the football team in general — rests on the bankability of a former running back and a former basketball player.
Or rather, the blanketability of the two.

Senior cornerbacks DeAndre Wright and Glover Quin carry a lot of weight on their shoulders as UNM heads into game-week preparation for its season opener against TCU.

10. Lobo Fans Can Catch a Ride To Football Games (Albuquerque Journal)
From Journal Reports

Mayor Martin Chávez and University of New Mexico president Dr. David J. Schmidly announced an agreement to provide shuttle service to all Lobo home football games during the 2008 season.

Special parking lots will be set up, and bus riders will be dropped off at the front door of the stadium. UNM will be working with APD to allow the buses easy access in and out of the game.

“Sitting in traffic and trying to find a place to park is not a way to start an evening,” Schmidly said. “We want to provide a stress-free ride, and this will be especially convenient for people who have difficulty walking a long distance since parking can be hard to find.”

The parking shuttle will be at Lot T at Lomas and University. A representative from UNM will be selling tickets at that location for the shuttle for $3 for each game, or $12 for a season pass. The bus service will begin two hours before kickoff.

11. To Win, or Not to Win? Stage Is Set for Questions (Albuquerque Journal)
RICK WRIGHT Of the Journal

O
pening night onstage, I’m sure, is fraught with anxiety. Still, when “Mamma Mia!” made its debut, I’m pretty sure the leading lady never got cut-blocked in the middle of “Dancing Queen.”

When Hamlet first clutched the skull of his deceased pal Yorick, I doubt that anyone tried to force a fumble.

Saturday, when the New Mexico Lobos open their 2008 football season at University Stadium, the only script will involve a handful of offensive plays at the start of the game.
The only score will be a thoroughly non-musical set of numbers on a big board. And there’ll be a bunch of guys dressed in purple whose sole purpose is to make the Lobos fold like a bad Broadway play.

12. The cost of college matters (Albuquerque Journal)
By Candice Choi

The Associated Press NEW YORK — Even if a student plans on a major where the financial rewards aren’t so obvious, such as art history or philosophy, most American families don’t factor in their child’s expected earning power when considering the potential debt load for college.

That’s according to a study released Wednesday by student lender Sallie Mae, which also found 40 percent of families don’t limit their search for a school based on the total expense.

14. Earliest Known Human Had Neanderthal Qualities (Discovery Channel) (UNM anthropologist Osbjorn Pearson quoted)
Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News e-mail share bookmark print

The world's first known modern human was a tall, thin individual -- probably male -- who lived around 200,000 years ago and resembled present-day Ethiopians, save for one important difference: He retained a few primitive characteristics associated with Neanderthals, according to a series of forthcoming studies conducted by multiple international research teams.

...From the size of the preserved bones, we estimated that Omo I was tall and slender, most likely around 5'10" tall and about 155 pounds," University of New Mexico anthropologist Osbjorn Pearson, who co-authored at least two of the new papers, told Discovery News.
