6. Letters to the Editor (Daily Lobo)

UNM chant is ridiculous; Lobos don't bark, they howl

Editor,

I just moved here and am becoming familiar with the local teams. I have looked into the Lobos, and I am disgusted with a certain slogan. What is the deal with "Everyone's a Lobo! Woof! Woof! Woof!"?

7. View from the bottom (Daily Lobo)
Education second to new image
By: Richard M. Berthold / Daily Lobo columnist

Having already spent almost $1 million in the past year, President Schmidly intends to spend another $4 million this year on improving the University's image. How perfectly American: Image triumphs over substance again. Rather than focusing resources on making UNM a better institution, the plan is to make it appear to be a better institution.

11. Lobo Senior Hits New Depth (Albuquerque Journal)
By Greg Archuleta, Journal Staff Writer

Matt Streid's career seemed destined for college football oblivion this time a year ago.

12. Speak Up! (Albuquerque Journal)

WHEN I WAS a boy, my mother always reinforced the characteristic phrase, "actions speak louder than words." If the University of New Mexico is serious about polishing its image, officials should act on raising academic standards, have professors show up for their classes, and reduce favoritism and cronyism by severing the umbilical cord to the Governor's Office, thus saving the taxpayers $4 million. R.N.

14. College leaders misguided on drinking age (Las Cruces Sun News Editorial)
The following editorial appeared in Sunday's Washington Post:

College officials who have signed on to the provocative proposition that the legal drinking age of 21 isn't working say that they just want to start a debate. Perhaps when they get done with that, they can move on to whether Earth really orbits the sun. Any suggestion that the current drinking age hasn't saved lives runs counter to the facts.
