Lobo Jackson Put on Contract
By Ken Sickenger, Journal Staff Writer

University of New Mexico women's basketball player Georonika Jackson will have an opportunity to stay with the team if she adheres to the terms of a contract with Lobo coach Don Flanagan.

Jackson, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, was one of several UNM athletes cited for underage drinking at a party in late July. She was later suspended from the team, Flanagan said.

But after discussions with Jackson and members of her family, Flanagan decided to put her “on contract” with an opportunity for reinstatement. He declined to give specifics about terms of the contract.

“Georonika expressed a lot of remorse,” Flanagan said, “and she and her family convinced me they were really motivated to get her back on track.”

The Lobos will begin holding individual workouts today, and Flanagan said Jackson will be allowed to participate.

“She still has some hurdles to clear before she'll be reinstated and able to play in the games,” he added, “but she has an opportunity.”

Jackson played in 26 games last season, averaging 2.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest. Her role increased as the season went on.
