5. Lobo Jackson Put on Contract (Albuquerque Journal)

University of New Mexico women's basketball player Georonika Jackson will have an opportunity to stay with the team if she adheres to the terms of a contract with Lobo coach Don Flanagan.

Jackson, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, was one of several UNM athletes cited for underage drinking at a party in late July. She was later suspended from the team, Flanagan said.

10. Panel To Help in NMSU Search (Albuquerque Journal)

New Mexico State University has chosen faculty, students, alumni and community members to serve on its presidential search committee.

The committee has been charged with finding the university's next president. Michael Martin, who was NMSU president for the past four years, became chancellor at Louisiana State University's main campus at Baton Rouge on Aug. 1.

NMSU Regents' Chair Bob Gallagher said the 25-member committee represents the breadth of the university and the state it serves. The committee will work with a consulting firm to select finalists.

The members include Gallagher, NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston and Tom Bagwell, deputy director of the state Agriculture Department.

11. Southwest To Cut 196 Flights (Albuquerque Journal)

* SAT Scores Hold Steady as Test Sees Slight Growth
The average scores of high-school graduates of 2008 who took the SAT held steady from last year as the number of test takers grew slightly.

* Incompetence Tops List of Complaints About Peer Reviewers
Incompetence by their reviewers was the most common problem reported by scientists who submitted manuscripts to scholarly journals. Almost two-thirds voiced that beef in a survey administered to scientists employed by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

* Sen. Grassley to Lead a Discussion on Endowment Spending and College Costs
The debate over how universities spend their endowments is returning to Capitol Hill. Sen. Charles E. Grassley and Rep. Peter Welch will hold a round table on September 8 in which higher-education officials and financial experts will discuss the relationship between endowments and college costs, as well as possible legislation that would require universities to spend 5 percent of their assets each year.
