Proclamation: ‘George Anselevicius Day at UNM’

Friday, Feb. 8, 2008

Whereas, George Anselevicius has served the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of New Mexico with distinction for more than twenty-five years as Dean and emeritus faculty member; and

Whereas, Professor Anselevicius has had a significant role in the education of generations of architecture students, teaching, encouraging, mentoring, and guiding the development of their unique talents and skills; and

Whereas, Professor Anselevicius’ long and distinguished career includes positions as Dean of the School of Architecture & Planning at the University of New Mexico, Dean of the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis, Chair of the Department of Architecture at Harvard University, and Chair and Professor of Architecture at State University of New York, Buffalo; and

Whereas, Professor Anselevicius believes that being part of the international community is a critically important element in design education, and to promote that value, he has traveled and studied in Mexico, Europe and India as a visiting academician and a Fulbright Scholar; and in turn brought noteworthy international visitors to the programs and schools that he has directed; and

Whereas, Professor Anselevicius has received awards and recognition for both his designs and his teaching including induction into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 1985, a Bravos award from the Arts Alliance in Albuquerque, and being named a Distinguished Professor by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture; and

Whereas, Professor Anselevicius served the profession as President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, a juror for numerous American Institute of Architects design awards, speaker, lecturer and writer on a wide range of design topics, and a board member of the New Mexico Architecture Foundation; and

Whereas, George Anselevicius’s greatest legacy is the students that he taught and the careers that they have pursued as architects and educators,

Therefore, be it resolved, that the University of New Mexico declare Friday, February 8, 2008 as George Anselevicius Day at UNM; and

Be it further resolved that the University of New Mexico extends its congratulations and heartfelt thanks to Professor George Anselevicius for his years of dedication to design education and all of his many achievements.
