UNM to Host Pre-conference Workshop Oct. 30 as Prelude to ‘A Conference on Ecosystem Services 2008’ in Naples, Fla.

The final pre-conference in a series of workshops leading up to ‘A Conference on Ecosystem Services (ACES) 2008: Using Science for Decision-Making in Dynamic Systems’ will be hosted by the University of New Mexico Thursday, Oct. 30. The Science Impact Laboratory for Policy and Economics (SILPE), directed by UNM Economics Professor David Brookshire, will host ‘Understanding the Demand for Ecosystem Services.’ New Mexico attendees will include Vince Tidwell of Sandia National Laboratory and Professor Jennifer Thacher of the Department of Economics at UNM.

Workshop 3 will examine the relationship between the institutional framework and the use of ecosystem services in decision-making. The workshop will consider how alternative institutional structures and policy instruments (e.g. incentives, market development or outreach) can help to achieve the vision developed in Workshop 1, while recognizing the analytical capabilities and limitations identified in Workshop 2.

What steps can be taken to more effectively and more broadly use ecosystem service information in resource management and development decisions? How can markets be developed and what are their impacts? The workshop will result in a short paper outlining institutional strategies that can be taken to achieve this vision.

Workshop 1, held in the spring and hosted by the MIT-USGS Science Impact Collaborative, focused on ‘Developing a Vision: Incorporating Ecosystems Services into Decision-Making.’ Workshop 2, held in July and hosted by the Greater Everglades Ecosystem Restoration, centered around ‘The Analytical Framework: Identifying Research Needs.’

The results from the three workshops will be integrated into a single synthesis document describing a strategy for making ecosystem services operational. A panel will discuss this document in a session at ACES 2008, Naples, Fla. – Dec. 8-11, 2008.
