Sociology Professor Patrick McNamara, who taught at UNM from 1970 until retirement
in 1998, died recently at age 72 of brain cancer.
One of UNM's most popular and well-loved professors, McNamara earned UNM's
Teacher of the Year Award in 1986.
He was active in the campus community and briefly served as sociology department
chair. McNamara specialized in the sociology of religion and, during his career,
studied for the priesthood.
Born in Merced, Calif., in 1929, he received his bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University and his master's from Saint Louis University. He earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles. McNamara taught at University of Texas-El Paso briefly before coming to UNM.
