The UNM Department of Theatre and Dance in conjunction with the Department
of Music present Into the Woods the award-winning Broadway musical
by Stephen Sondheim Nov. 16, 17, 24, 29, 30 and Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and
Nov. 18, 25 at 2 p.m. at Rodey Theatre at the Center for the Arts
This fairy tale about fairy tales features classic and familiar characters
Cinderella searching for her prince, Jack of beanstalk fame and the Baker
and his Wife setting off on their various quests, comically crossing
paths again and again in the foreboding woods.
The production features both students and community members, including Laurie
Finnegan as the Witch, as well as a special guest director from New York, Nona
Lloyd.
Graduate student Javier Mendoza will conduct a live orchestra.
Lloyd has directed plays, musicals, childrens television and theatre
productions for more than 15 years in New York and Florida.
Finnegan is well known to Albuquerque audiences as a singer and actor, she also
teaches acting at UNM.
This is the first joint production between UNMs Theatre & Dance and
Music departments.
We have been working for a long time to bring together the two departments
and to combine the enormous skill and talent of students and faculty in both,
said Denise Schulz, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. We hope
to soon offer a degree in Musical Theatre.
Theatre and Dance will provide many of the singer/actors as well as technical
support in the form of costumes, scenery, sound and lighting.
Based on the book by James Lapine, "Into the Woods" made its Broadway
debut in 1987 with Bernadette Peters and ran for 764 performances before it
made national and international tours and became a Public Broadcasting Station
production.
The performance will be interpreted for the deaf.
Ticket prices are $12 general admission, $10 faculty/staff/seniors, $7 students/children. Tickets available at the UNM Ticket Office: 277-4569, any tickets.com outlet, 851-5050, or online at www.tickets.com.
