Lowry advises North Campus
By Carol A. Garcia
Janet
Lowry, financial aid officer for North Campus, has seen UNM evolve during her
21 years of employment on campus. But she sees a price to progress. There
have been a lot of changes to UNM since I started, mainly in the appearance
of the campus. We seem to be losing more and more recreational and green spaces,
she says, noting new and recent construction.
Lowry says the most satisfying part of her job is the support I get from
staff and co-workers and the many wonderful people Ive worked with at
UNM. And many of those people have become great friends.
She first started at UNM in Leisure Services, which was once called Intramurals.
She then moved into the Student Financial Aid Department where she worked as
administrative assistant, then accountant, on to processor and finally, advisor.
During her years at UNM she has earned a degree with a double major in history
and English. I am very grateful for the opportunity to return to school
and get my degree, Lowry says.
At one time during her coursework she held a workstudy position. But to help
herself attend school full-time and raise her three daughters she returned to
work fulltime as UNM staff.
Lowry says that she gives credit and kudos to Financial Aid and
other departments who support her advisement work on North Campus. She provides
financial aid services for students in law, nursing, pharmacy and to students
at the graduate sites in Taos and Santa Fe, which are part of Extended University.
Administrators realized the need for financial aid advising for their students
and made it happen, she says. Now there is easy access for students to drop
in and work with Lowry one-on-one.
Although she feels like a one-woman band on North Campus she has great support
from staff and students, she adds.
Lowrys UNM legacy doesnt end with her. Two of her three daughters, Esther and Angela, received their degrees from UNM, while her other daughter, Gabriella Gigi, received her nursing accreditation from TVI. Angela is busy preparing for her upcoming wedding in June with moms help.
