UNM HONORS OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ADVISORS
Four
academic advisors from the University of New Mexico are the recipients of the
first Outstanding Advisor Awards established by Peter White, dean of University
College.
"The awards are given to advisors who demonstrate continual and consistent
service to students. They are awarded to individuals who design and implement
creative activities aimed to help students and improve the University's retention
and graduation rates," said White.
White said that University College has 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled,
but many will transfer to other schools and colleges within the university.
"It is appropriate, therefore, that University College acknowledge the
advisors."
He said, "Our advisors are teachers in very specific ways. They help us
form a cooperative relationship with other departments and colleges."
Each recipient received $250 and a small plaque commemorating their achievement.
The award winners are:
Joanne Silva is a senior academic advisor at the Valencia branch campus. In her three years at the branch, she has demonstrated initiative by implementing a learning community for English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
White said, "She works above and beyond expectations combining her teaching and advising skills and has assisted the administration in placement and tracking of students in courses for ESL and math."
Roxanne Littlefield is a math and statistics academic advisor at UNM's main campus. "She takes a proactive approach in implementing an institutional solution that works for everyone, but especially for the students," said White.
Mayna Benally is a senior academic advisor in the College of Nursing at UNM-Gallup. "Mayna has helped to create an environment at the Gallup campus where every student matters," said White.
Ann Marie Ornelas is a senior academic advisor in the College of Fine Arts at UNM main campus. "She is informed, patient, and articulate in meeting the needs of all the students she advises," said White.
